Branford Swims at SCC Meet

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team saw several athletes compete in the Southern Connecticut Conference Division II Virtual Championship that took place from Oct. 26 to Nov. 10.

This year, due to restrictions in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCC Championship did not take place as it typically would with all the teams competing at one site. Instead, the 17 teams in the SCC competed at their respective home pools, after which the performances in every event were ranked in order score out the team standings for Division I and Division II, as well as the SCC overall. Branford finished in eighth place with 538 points scored for the Division II meet and finished 16th in the SCC with 221 points scored for those standings.

Junior Erika Barone swam a time of 2:24.46 in the 200 individual medley to take fifth place at the SCC Division II Championship and 15th place in the SCC Championship for Branford. Barone also placed fifth in the division and 14th in the conference for the 100 backstroke by swimming a time of 1:05.92.

Senior Melissa Juliano finished with a 1:07.19 in the 100 backstroke to take sixth place in the divisional meet and 16th place in the SCC meet. Juliano also posted a time of 26.94 for the 50 freestyle, finishing sixth in the division and 22nd for the conference.

Junior Rory Jacobson placed sixth in the 100 butterfly at the divisional meet and was 26th in the SCC with her time of 1:09.32. Jacobson also swam a time of 2:35.66 in the 200 IM to take 13th in the division and 31st in the SCC.

Branford also had three relays compete at the SCC meet. The Hornets were represented by their 400 freestyle relay of Juliano, senior Shae Lepre, senior Katherine Parsell, and Barone (6th in the division and 14th in the SCC at 4:29.41); the 200 medley relay of Juliano, Barone, Jacobson, and senior Jennifer Antell (8th and 16th at 2:07.70); and the 200 freestyle relay of Jacobson, sophomore Emma Hall, Parsell, and Antell (8th and 16th at 2:06.71).
