Epke Scores 100th Career Goal with Guilford; Boys’ Hoops Beats North Haven

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford girls’ hockey squad was on the ice for two games last week and came away with a split. The Grizzlies are now sporting a record of 4-1 for the season.

Guilford started off its week on Feb. 23 facing West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy at Bennett Rink. The Grizzlies took their first loss of the year by dropping a 5-3 decision in the game.

Junior Maddie Epke scored two goals and had an assist for Guilford in the loss. Freshman Sofia Cuozzo had a goal and dished out two assists. Junior goalie Julia McDonald made 28 saves.

Then on Feb. 27, the Grizzlies took on Hand/Coginchaug/Valley/H-K at Northford Ice Pavilion. Guilford promptly got back in the win column by claiming a 9-6 victory over the co-op squad.

Epke scored five goals and had three assists in the win. As part of her big night, Epke also notched the 100th goal of her high school career at Guilford. Cuozzo scored three goals, and sophomore Kim Evans also had a goal for the Grizzlies.

Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team lost two of its three games last week and is now 3-4 this season. The Grizzlies dropped contests against Branford and Lyman Hall before finishing the week with a convincing win over North Haven.

Guilford took a 61-56 home loss to Branford on Feb. 22. Senior Jake Ciocca had 15 points, while sophomore Justin Hess scored 14 points for the Grizzlies. Senior Jack Stanton had 12 points, and junior Theo Freeman scored 10 points.

On Feb. 24, Guilford hosted Lyman Hall and lost the game by a 47-42 final. Hess had a big night, netting 24 points for Guilford. Ciocca scored 13 points in the contest.

Guilford bounced back from its two defeats when the team played a road game against North Haven on Feb. 26. The Grizzlies claimed a 66-38 victory at North Haven to earn their third win of the year.

Hess turned in another big performance by scoring 22 points for Guilford. Ciocca contributed 12 points in the victory. Seniors Jackson Tandler and Evan Ghoreyeb both scored five points, as did sophomore Luke Ste. Marie.

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team moved to 0-7 after taking three defeats last week. The Grizzlies lost to Branford, Lyman Hall, and North Haven in their recent matchups.

On Feb. 22, Guilford dropped a 51-40 decision in Branford. Junior Miabella Diaz scored 18 points for Guilford in the game. Senior Moira Kellaher scored nine points, junior Faith O’Donnell had eight points, and sophomore Ava Lepro scored five points.

Two days later, Guilford took a 43-38 loss to Lyman Hall in a road game. O’Donnell scored 24 points for the Grizzlies in the defeat. Diaz and Lepro added five points apiece.

Then on Feb. 26, Guilford hosted North Haven and was edged out by a 36-34 score. O’Donnell scored 16 points for Guilford. Diaz had nine points, and sophomore Hailey Hutchison scored six points.
