North Haven Lions Establishes Leo Club

By Press release from the North Haven Lions Club

On Aug. 28, the new North Haven Leo Club held its organizational meeting with the founding 16 members of the club and elected officers and directors. This club, along with thousands of other Leo clubs around the world, are the youth organizations of the Lions Clubs International and encourage development of leadership qualities through participation in local community service.

Under the guidance of North Haven’s Lions Club Treasurer and Service Activities Chair Alan J. Sturtz, the Leo Club members present elected Jane Leamon as president, Katelyn Spader as vice president, Darek Samsel as treasurer, Aaron Baraquin as secretary, and Hannah Leamon, Hanako Moffat, Tai Moffat, Nina Novicki, and Amelia Shaw as directors.

Sturtz acts as Leo Club advisor and has been working closely with the students since the idea to establish a North Haven Leo Club was first floated at a Lions Club Second Saturday event in the spring. Sturtz advises how to manage the club, recruit new Leo members, and begin to participate in and lead community service projects in town.

The aspiring Leos assisted on Lions projects through the spring and summer including the Lions Second Saturday projects cleaning up John Grover Wyman Park, food drives for the North Haven Food Pantries, eyeglasses collection, and dog and cat food and towel and blanket collection for Fidelco Guide Dogs and The Animal Haven. They also accompanied the Lions to the Tuesday Night Music on the Green concert series, helping with community outreach and further collections for Fidelco and The Animal Haven in North Haven. The North Haven Leos will continue to support Lions community service projects as well as identifying and planning service projects led by the Leos.

The Leos are always looking to welcome new members who are between the ages of 12 to 18 and are looking for a fun, social way to gain Community services hours as well as find leadership opportunities. For more information, email NorthHavenLeoClub@gmail.com.
