Nibbles: Edible Straws

My friend Shelby recently told me she and friends went to a restaurant and their cocktail stirrer was a piece of pasta. I looked into it and found that many restaurants in Europe have been doing this for years. There are some for sale online, but they are pretty expensive. I also found edible straws made of bamboo that are therefore gluten-free. There are so many options other than the ubiquitous plastic straws and stirrers that are adding to the islands of plastic waste in our oceans and the piles on our shores, all of it endangering fish and wildlife. As odd as a pasta stirrer might sound, we must continue to look for other options for all of that plastic.—Lee White
