Guilford Girls’ Tennis Nets Three Victories; Girls’ Lacrosse Takes First Loss, Bounces Back with Win

The Guilford girls’ tennis team was victorious in all three of its matches last week and is now sporting a record of 6-3 in the spring season. Guilford posted wins versus Lauralton Hall, Mercy, and Foran in recent action.
On April 26, the Grizzlies traveled to Eisenhower Park and defeated Lauralton Hall by a 5-2 score. Senior Hannah Dietzko (6-1, 6-2), sophomore Riley Mullet (6-1, 6-0), senior Emma Mullett (6-1, 6-1), freshman Molly Peterson (6-1, 6-0) all won their singles matches for Guilford. The Grizzlies’ doubles duo of senior captain Kiera Stankewich and freshman Kallie Kagan earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Guilford went on to notch 7-0 victories over Mercy and Foran on April 28 and 30, respectively. Against Mercy, Dietzko (6-3, 6-0), Riley Mullett (6-1, 6-1), Emma Mullett (6-1, 6-0), and Peterson (6-0, 6-0) each won their matches in singles play. The doubles teams of Stankewich and Kagan (6-0, 6-1), senior Veronica Zimmer and freshman Kendall Mulligan (6-1, 6-1), and senior captain Claire Pringle and freshman Gabby Kellner (7-6, 7-6) were also victorious.
In the Foran win, Dietzko (6-2, 6-1), Riley Mullett (6-1, 6-1), Emma Mullett (6-0, 6-0) and Peterson (6-0, 6-0) all earned wins at singles. On the doubles court, the tandems of Stankewich and Kagan (6-2, 6-1), Zimmer and Mulligan (6-1, 6-2), and Pringle and freshman Alexie Gipson each won their respective matches.
The Guilford boys’ tennis team moved to 3-6 after losing two of its last three matchups.
On April 26, the Grizzlies lost to Xavier by a 4-3 score at Wesleyan University. One day later, Guilford bounced back with a 4-3 victory against Branford.
Senior Walker Mulligan (6-1, 6-0), junior Dominic Dadak (6-3, 6-3), and senior captain Ethan DeAngelo (6-1, 6-1) earned singles victories for the Grizzlies versus Branford. Guilford’s doubles pairing of sophomores Patrick Zhang and Max Banning netted a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
On May 1, Guilford faced Cheshire and took a 4-3 defeat against the Rams.
The Guilford softball team won two out of its three contests last week to improve its record 4-7 this season.
On April 26, the Grizzlies defeated SCC rival Daniel Hand by the final score of 11-3. Junior Allie Petonito went 3-for-5 with a double for the Grizzlies. Guilford recorded 16 hits as a team in the win.
Two days later, Guilford posted a 2-0 shutout over Sacred Heart Academy in a home game. Senior Ema Signore pitched a complete game shutout and struck out five to lift Guilford to the victory. Petonito scored both runs for the Grizzlies, while senior Carissa Ross went 2-for-2 with a double.
On May 1, Guilford hosted Mercy and lost to the Tigers by a 9-1 final.
The Guilford baseball team lost four games last week and to move to 1-9 on the season.
The Grizzlies opened their week with a 10-9 loss at Cheshire on April 26. Senior captain Jake Ciocca had four RBI for the Grizzlies, who generated 13 hits in the defeat.
The next day, Guilford took an 11-0 loss against West Haven. Then on April 28, the Grizzlies lost a 4-1 contest to Hand in a home game. Senior Sam Huffman tallied eight strikeouts on the mound for Guilford. Freshman Mike Buccaro had two hits in the game.
In its last game of the week, Guilford took a 14-8 defeat versus Xavier at Palmer Field on April 30.
The Guilford girls’ lacrosse team was handed its first loss of the season last week, but the Grizzlies rebounded by notching a win in their following contest. Guilford is now 7-1 overall on the year.
On April 27, Guilford took a 12-11 road loss against Fairfield Ludlowe. Freshman Payton Root scored five goals for Guilford, while junior Maddie Epke scored three goals. Senior Hannah Tillier, junior Taylor Farace, and junior Lorelei King each scored a goal. Junior goalkeeper Sydney Widlitz made 10 saves for the Grizzlies.
Three days later, Guilford defeated Hand by a 20-10 score in another road game. Root and Epke combined for 12 of the team’s goals in the win. Tillier and senior Sydney Cunningham scored two goals apiece. King, Farace, senior Ella Kagan, and sophomore MJ Santa Barbara all added one goal for the Grizzlies, who saw Widlitz make nine saves in net.
The Guilford boys’ lacrosse team lost its only game of the week to move to 0-6 on the season.
On April 29, the Grizzlies hosted Hand and took a 9-3 defeat to the Tigers. Senior Aedan McDermott, sophomore Jack Jardine, and junior Rion Barbetti each scored a goal in the loss. McDermott also had an assist.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford boys’ outdoor track and field team moved to 0-3 after taking a 101-46 loss to Sheehan on April 28.
Guilford saw its 4x800 relay team of sophomore Michael Masotti, sophomore Bretton Garrick, sophomore Zachary Pawelek, and senior Caleb Harris take first place with a time of 8:44.1 at the meet. The 4x400 relay of Harris, Garrick, junior Thomas Gregory and junior Justin Shiffrin finished first with a mark of 3:45.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team took its first loss of the year with a 118-31 defeat versus Sheehan on April 28. The Grizzlies have a record of 2-1 on the season.
On April 30, junior Julia Antony competed on behalf of the Grizzlies in the Connecticut Distance Festival at Xavier High School. Antony placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run by clocking in with a personal best time of 5:09.23.
