North Haven Girls’ Volleyball, Soccer Begin with Wins

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team kicked off the 2021 fall season by sweeping Shelton in its first match of the campaign last week. On Sept. 9, North Haven traveled to Shelton for its season opener and blanked the Gaels by the final score of 3-0.

North Haven shut out Shelton behind set scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-18. Senior Hannah Auddino handed out 23 assists to go with four digs and three aces for North Haven. Fellow senior Caroline Toni had 11 kills with seven digs and one ace in the victory. Junior Kayla Balisciano punched up 18 digs, threw down five kills, and also dealt out a pair of aces.

Brianna Kleckner enters her sixth year as North Haven’s head coach. Last season, North Haven finished with overall record of 6-6 and advanced to the championship match of the SCC Division B Tournament, marking the first time that the team had ever reached a conference final. North Haven earned wins versus Sacred Heart Academy (3-1) and Lyman Hall (3-0) before taking a 3-1 loss to Cheshire in the final.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer team hosted Lyman Hall for its opening game of the fall season last week. North Haven earned a one-goal victory over Lyman Hall to start the year on a triumphant note.

On Sept. 10, North Haven played a home game versus Lyman Hall in its season opener. Head Coach Gary Collins’s squad edged out Lyman Hall by the final score of 1-0 at North Haven High School.

Senior Ada Forbes scored the first goal of the game in the 30th minute to give North Haven a 1-0 lead. Lyman Hall responded by scoring a goal five minutes later to make it 1-1 at halftime.

Forbes netted her second goal of the day in the 55th minute to put North Haven up 2-1. Then in the 61st minute, junior Lily Coish found the back of the net give North Haven a 3-1 advantage. Lyman Hall cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 72nd minute, but North Haven was able to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

This marks Collins’s third season as North Haven’s head coach. In 2020, North Haven went 1-6 and took a 7-0 defeat against Cheshire in the first round of the SCC Division A Tournament.

Field Hockey

The North Haven field hockey squad played two games during the first week of the 2021 season. North Haven earned a tie with Sheehan and took an overtime loss to Mercy to start to the year.

North Haven started off its season by battling Sheehan to a 2-2 tie at North Haven Middle School on Sept. 10. Senior Hailey Caruso scored a goal for North Haven on an assist from fellow senior Noelle Carmody. Senior Juliana DeAngelo added a goal for North Haven to help the team earn the draw.

The following day, North Haven was on the road to face Mercy for its second game of the year. North Haven dropped a 1-0 decision to Mercy in overtime.

Kim Bouffard begins her eighth campaign as North Haven’s head coach. Last season, North Haven went 1-7 and took a 4-1 loss to Hamden in the first round of the SCC Division B Tournament.
