Morgan Scores 50 on Coginchaug Co-op; Field Hockey Sees a Solid Week

The Morgan football team hosted the Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/East Hampton co-op squad for a Pequot Conference contest at the Peters Complex on Oct. 22. The Huskies posted a 50-20 victory against the previously undefeated Blue Devils and now have a record of 5-1.
Senior quarterback Andrew Nye put forth another big-time performance by going 38-for-54 with 466 passing yards and seven touchdowns for Morgan. Nye threw four touchdowns in the first half to help the Huskies take a 28-14 lead at the break. Nye followed with two TD tosses in the third quarter and one more in the fourth to increase Morgan’s lead to 50-14.
The Huskies spread out their aerial attack as five different players caught touchdowns from Nye. Senior Alex Fratamico had 12 receptions for 152 yards and two TDs in the game. Senior Ethan Ranaudo had nine catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, senior Garret Garbinski caught eight passes for 91 yards and a score, senior Nick Schmidt had four catches for 74 yards and two TDs, and senior Cameron Johnson reeled in a 58-yard touchdown reception for Morgan. Nye also completed a pair of 2-point conversion passes to Garbinski, who also ran for a 2-point conversion and completed another one to Fratamico.
On defense, senior Jordan Armstrong and sophomore Jacob Jones both had a sack for Morgan. Armstrong also had nine tackles, and sophomore Tyler Baldwin made eight tackles to go with a fumble recovery.
Morgan has a bye for this week. The Huskies’ next game is against Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman at Coventry High School on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
The Morgan field hockey team notched two wins and a tie last week to finish its regular season with a record of 5-9-2. The Huskies played three non-conference games during the final week of their regular season, picking up a win versus Somers, earning a tie with Fitch, and then notching a victory over Windsor.
On Oct. 18, Morgan faced Somers on the road and won the contest by a 3-0 score. Then on Oct. 21, the Huskies hosted Fitch and played the Falcons to a 3-3 tie at the Indian River Complex. Junior Mary Minichino, junior Sophia Vigorito, and senior Maggie O’Donnell scored the goals for the Huskies.
The very next day, Morgan faced Windsor for a home game and won the contest 2-0 on Senior Night. Minichino scored one goal on an assist by O’Donnell and then netted the other goal unassisted. Sophomore goalie Jill DeMaio made one save to get the shutout in net.
The Huskies honored the four members of their senior class for this game. Morgan’s four seniors are O’Donnell, Bryana Bautista, Kyra Savage, and Julia Walker.
The Morgan boys’ soccer team played three games during the last week of its regular season and came away with a win and two ties to finish with a record of 11-2-3. The Huskies defeated Haddam-Killingworth and then earned ties against Old Saybrook and East Lyme to close out regular-season play.
Morgan opened up the week by earning a 2-0 home win versus Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 19. Juniors Matt Lopez and Steven Kinser scored Morgan’s goals during the first half with both coming on assists by fellow junior Sebastian Kadlof.
Two days later, the Huskies hosted Old Saybrook and the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Morgan took a 1-0 lead when junior Jake Mastriano scored from Kadlof in the 20th minute. Old Saybrook tied the game with a goal in the 62nd minute, and the two sides went on to finish the game in a 1-1 deadlock.
Then on Oct. 23, Morgan played to a 0-0 tie at non-conference opponent East Lyme. Senior goalie Bailey Goss came up with several big saves to preserve the shutout and help the Huskies get the draw. Goss now has 10 shutouts on the season.
The Morgan girls’ volleyball team completed its regular season by playing three matches last week. The Huskies won one of three contests by defeating Cromwell and went on to finish the regular season with a record of 7-13.
Morgan took a 3-0 home loss against Coginchaug on Oct. 18. Two days later, the Huskies hosted Cromwell and claimed a 3-0 victory. Then on Oct. 22, Morgan took a 3-0 road loss versus East Hampton in its regular-season finale.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Morgan boys’ cross country team sent five athletes to compete at the Shoreline Conference Championship at East Hampton High School on Oct. 23. The Huskies scored 267 points as a squad and finished in 10th place at the meet.
Senior Jason Dombkowski came in 32nd place for Morgan by timing in with a mark of 20:12 at Shorelines. Junior Nicholas Spaziano finished in 53rd place (21:26), senior Tim McComiskey claimed 58th place (21:35), sophomore Robbie Estabrook finished in 62nd (21:40), and freshman Luke Wyatt finished in 69th place (25:05).
Girls’ Cross Country
The Morgan girls’ cross country squad was represented by four runners at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship meet.
Freshman Natalie Estabrook ran a time of 25:37 to finish in 34th place for Morgan at Shorelines. Sophomore Anastasia Luke came in 38th place by running a time of 26:55. Junior Muntara Singh finished in 52nd place (33:22), while sophomore Shania Weisse finished 53rd (33:36) for the Huskies.
